Tile That Does Not Crack or Sound Hollow
Tile is the most permanent floor we install and the least forgiving of shortcuts, which is why it is worth understanding what you are buying. A tile floor fails in one of two ways: it cracks, or it releases and sounds hollow underfoot. Both trace back to the same two causes — a substrate that moves, and mortar that never made full contact with the back of the tile. Centennial gives us plenty of the first problem, because expansive clay under a slab-on-grade entry or basement bath will shift seasonally whether or not there is tile on top of it. That is why we set over a proper backer board or an uncoupling membrane rather than straight onto a slab, and why we check coverage as we go instead of trusting the trowel.

Substrate evaluation and flatness correction
Large-format porcelain demands a flatter plane than small tile does, so the deck is straightedged and corrected before any board or membrane goes down.
Cement backer board installation
Thin-set bedded and screwed to plywood decks on the correct schedule, with the seams taped and mudded so the joints do not telegraph.
Uncoupling membrane over slabs
An anti-fracture membrane lets a moving concrete slab shift without transferring that movement into the tile above it — the single best defence against a cracked grout line in a Colorado basement.
Dry layout and cut planning
We lay the floor out dry first so the cuts land sensibly, the pattern centres on the room's sightline, and you do not end up with a two-inch sliver in the doorway.
Full mortar coverage, verified
Tile is back-buttered where the product requires it and we pull a set tile periodically to confirm coverage, which is the only honest way to know it is right.
Waterproofing at wet areas
Liquid or sheet membrane at shower pans, tub surrounds and laundry rooms, detailed into the drain assembly.
Movement joints where they belong
Soft joints at the perimeter and at changes of plane, because a tile field with nowhere to expand is a tile field that will eventually tent.
Grouting, cleaning and haze removal
Grout floated, tooled and cleaned properly, with the haze removed before it cures rather than scrubbed off later.

Three Stages of a Tile Job
- Step 1
Measurement, material and layout discussion
We measure, assess the substrate, and talk through tile size, finish and grout colour in the actual room light. Large-format tile, small mosaics and natural stone each carry different prep costs, and you will see those differences priced separately rather than folded into one vague figure.
- Step 2
Demolition and substrate build-up
The old floor comes out, thinset gets ground on dust extraction, and backer board or membrane is installed. Waterproofing goes in at wet areas and is allowed to cure. This stage commonly takes one to two days and is where most of the quality of the finished floor is actually determined.
- Step 3
Setting, grouting and finish
Tile is set to the dry layout, left to cure overnight, then grouted, cleaned and sealed. Most bathrooms and entries finish inside three to four days end to end. You will need to stay off the fresh floor for the cure window, and we will tell you exactly how long that is for your product before we start.
How We Set Tile Differently
We build a substrate before we set a tile
Setting straight onto a slab or onto bare plywood is faster and cheaper and it is why so many local tile floors crack along one line. Backer board or an uncoupling membrane is standard on our estimates, not an upgrade we hope you will decline.
Coverage gets checked, not assumed
We pull a tile during the set to look at the mortar transfer on the back of it. If coverage is short we change the trowel or the technique on the spot, because a hollow tile is invisible until the day it breaks.
The layout is agreed before anything is permanent
You see the dry layout and the cut lines before the mortar comes out. Nobody discovers on grout day that the pattern runs out awkwardly against the vanity.
